Su memoria, Brother, I’m Dying, fue finalista en el 2007 del National Book Award y en el 2008 ganó el National Book Critics Circle Award en autobiografía. Obtuvo una beca MacArthur Fellows Program Genius en el 2009 . En el 2017 ganó el Neustadt International Prize for Literature.
